Gearhead Specs - Tightening torques for gearhead mounting kit bolts

  • Adapter Plate Bolt Table
  • Shaft Clamp Screw and Torque Table

When installing a motor onto a gearhead, it is important to properly tighten the bolts that hold the motor to the adapter plate. The table below shows the recommended torques for each type of bolt. For smaller bolts, we also recommend use of either a thread locking compound or a lock washer for the highest strength.

Bolt Table

Please note that these only apply to standard aluminum mounting kits with socket head cap screws. Custom stainless steel mounting kits (e.g. for caustic environments) can handle higher bolt torques. Consult the factory if you have a stainless steel mounting kit.

Mounting Kit Table

Below is a list of common mounting kits with their associated mounting bolt sizes. Note that these are the bolts that attach the motor to the adapter plate, not the bolts that attach the adapter plate to the gearhead. If you do not find your mounting kit listed, consult the factor for assistance.

Adapter Plate Bolt Table

In the unlikely event that you need to change out a mounting kit in the field, you will need to bolt the new mounting kit's adapter plate onto the back of the gearhead. Bolt sizes for Parker's PS, PX, RS, RX and PV series gearheads are listed below. Remember that these are the bolts that secure the adapter plate to the gearhead, not the bolts that secure the motor to the mounting plate.

Gearhead Adapter Plate Bolt Size

PS90/PX90/PX34/RS90/RX90/RX34 M5

Shaft Clamp Screw and Torque Table

The screw that tightens down the input shaft clamp can and should be tightened to a higher torque. This is because the clamp itself is made out of steel, which allows its threads to bear higher loads than the aluminum threads that secure the mounting plates and motors. Below is a table that shows what type of screw is used along with the recommended tightening torque. It is important to use the screw that came with the gearhead. If another screw is used that is not as strong (e.g. weaker steel), it may not be able to accept the same tightening torque.

Gearhead Clamp Screw Torque [in-lbs] Torque [N-m] Notes
PS60/PX60/PX23/RS60/RX60/RX23 M4 41 4.6
