How do I start troubleshooting a 590+?

Print Friendly and PDF

To get started, the 590+ manual has an extensive amount of troubleshooting assistance. If you are getting unwanted behavior or have a fault, then a dedicated section called "TRIPS AND FAULT FINDING" is a fantastic starting location to solving your problem. The manuals are thorough, and are firmware dependent.

Manuals can be found on the 590+ on Parker.com under the "Product Support" tab. Accessory manuals (such as tech option cards) also have separate manuals associated with them.

Consult the manual for "Initial Drive Start" to ensure the drive is functioning properly and to get you started. Refer to "Calibration and Start-Up" chapter

Starting: "Trips and Fault Finding" section of the manual:

  1. Trips/Faults/Error Codes on the keypad.
    1. There is an explanation of all trips and possible solutions to them in the manual that tech support will always have you try first.
  2. Flow-Chart Checklist Guides for:
    1. General operation
    2. Hardware troubleshooting
    3. Field failures
    4. Contactor failures
    5. SCR troubleshooting
    6. Motor checks
    7. etc.
  3. Alarm Status information as well as Diagnostics Information (both found through the keypad menu map, or in DSELite)
    1. Hexadecimal Representation of Trips - The LAST ALARM, HEALTH WORD, HEALTH STORE and ALARM HISTORY parameters use a four digital hexadecimal number to identify individual trips.  Each trip has a unique corresponding number as shown here
    2. You can see if there are other Alarms present
    3. If there are issues with parameters related to the issue
    4. Or find a pattern within the alarm history.
    5. Note: It is common to see "Undervoltage" trips after power-down. Seeing "Undervoltage" during operation, is an issue.

After consulting the manual:

Try checking out the FAQs in the sidebar under DC590+ Series to see if your issue has any write ups on it from an applications engineer.

  • If an article relevant to your issue is already posted, Parker Support would have you walk through it to gather more information or narrow down a root cause to start with.

After consulting the knowledgebase sidebar:

  1. Do you have the proper monitoring devices if relevant to the issue (Oscilloscope, current clamp, etc?)
  2. Are you able to narrow the issue down to one part of the machine?
    1. Have you tried swapping hardware if pertinent?
    2. Is one side of the machine working but another not?
    3. Is the drive getting proper signals from external sources? (Potentiometer, PLC, contactors, power supply, etc)
      • Example: Questions for a drive that does not want to start running from a fieldbus command would be:
        1. Is your PLC sending the proper control and status words?
        2. If so, is the drive accepting those parameters as viewable within DSELite?
        3. If further yes, then the issue may be programming logic not executing properly or you are missing various bits to send.
        4. If your PLC was not sending proper control and status words to begin with, check the PLC code.
  3. Use the DSELite software to view your programming. DSELite has Help files at the top of the window and within every function block to understand your specific programming and how it is executing.
    1. If no fault are on the keypad or in DSELite but you are getting unwanted behavior, you can extract the project file and then view it Online to see changes in real time with software debugging tools; or view how your specific machine's parameters are designed to interact.
    2. What Software and Communication Cable are used for Programming?
    3. How do I Extract Parameters from a 590+ to View Them?
